What are your go-to inexpensive and 'non-tat' presents that people actually use?

Main Post:

There are a few 'safe presents' that work for secret Santa, stocking fillers, partners of friends (aka people you don't know super well but you still want to gift something to when you're having a Christmas celebration together)

I wonder if there are other things I'm not thinking of. Things you can't really go wrong with. I like to gift things that won't accumulate dust at home, and people actually like using.

For example:

  • Socks (you can never have enough socks and Christmassy ones are just a good little gift)
  • Candles (works from my experience better for females than males)
  • slippers
  • anything edible - had someone got a nice idea for something that feels a bit more ‘special’ than just chocolate?

Can we create a big list of really nice inexpensive gift ideas?

Gifts that are on the cheap side for a lot of kids (varying ages)?

Main Post:

I’m the oldest cousin in my family, and I really love giving gifts. Problem is, over the past few years, the number of younger cousins I have has been multiplying like crazy. I’m looking for gifts that are like cheap cheap cheap that I could get, so that I could give each kid a little present. (Even if it is just something tiny, these kids love unwrapping things and getting any kind of gift!!). These are their ages: four 6-year-old boys (one set of twins), two 3-year-old girls, one 3-year-old boy, one 2-year-old boy, one 20-month-old girl, one newborn girl

bonus: one 16-year-old boy, two 15-year-old girls, one 12-year-old girl and one 11-year-old boy

I was thinking maybe books, since It can be pretty easy to find cheap books for kids those ages, but I would love to hear any other ideas!! Maybe something cheap, like candy etc. that I could pair with the books?

Top Comment: If they are under 2: literally anything in a box COVERED in bows. Yanking bows off boxes is the best gift of all, apparently. If they are under 4: bandaids in fun patterns. Not sure why little kids are so obsessed with bandaids, but they are. If they are under 9: metallic temporary tattoos. You can get packs of a zillion on Amazon and then give each kid a few sheets each. After I gave my six nephews and nieces these, they requested more of them for like four years straight. This is has been the most successful gift I've ever given by a really, really long shot. Also, I hesitate to mention slime because their parents will hate you, but seemingly all age kids love slime.

What was the most meaningful inexpensive gift you’ve given or received?

Main Post:

I trying to plan ahead for Christmas and have very limited funds. I’d love ideas for any age as my family’s ages range from 2-86. I’m not crafty at all, but could maybe get some help from a friend for anything artsy.

Top Comment: When I was a teen, I struggled a lot with self esteem. My mom went on a trip and found a little like, $5 bracelet with a single charm that said "I am worthy". I cried, wore it every day for years. When the bracelet broke i put the charm on a necklace. I just passed it on to the child of a friend after it being my favorite piece of jewelry for over 15 years.

Cheap gifts to buy in Cusco, Peru?

Main Post:

I'm heading to Cusco at the end of April. I've spent the last year as a student teacher in an elementary classroom and I'd like to bring something home for the kids.

I've been thinking that I'll bring some Peruvian candy and a coin that isn't worth much for each student. Does anyone have any better suggestions? There are almost 30 children, so whatever I buy needs to be small enough to carry home and somewhat inexpensive.

Top Comment:

You'll find tons of cheap items if you stay away from the main square as it is rather touristy and can be expensive.

If you visit the San Blas neighborhood around the square you'll find a few shops. Do negotiate for lower prices especially if you're buying in bulk.

I did find a knock off North Face shop and bought myself a $35 dollar jacket :)

On Amazon you can find F1 posters from some of the current teams. Under $10 too. And on eBay you can find authentic team apparel for cheap as well. But most of it is a few years old.

Girlfriend [22F] Was Upset at the Cheap Gifts I [25M] Got Her. I [25M] Tend to be a Saver and Live Modestly

Main Post:

It was my girlfriend of half a year's birthday and she was throwing a party with some friends. I'm a pretty modest person myself - I have not celebrated my own birthday for about 10 years now and normally my friends just treat me to a round of drinks or something on the weekend of my birthday.

Naturally, I didn't really know what a good price point was. She loves Star Wars , so I ended up going with a Star Wars necklace and another Star Wars themed lighting fixture on Amazon for her, with the total price at about $30. I also took her out to lunch at a fancier place than I would normally go to, at around $40 each.

After the party, she said she was upset at me because the gifts I bought her were cheap, and talked about how she sees other girls getting gifts of $500 or $1000 of like a new phone/purse and that sort. I wasn't really sure what to say about that, having not gotten gifts my whole life nor wanting anything.

I make pretty good money at $75,000 a year, and anticipate that I will be making $85000 next year, but I've been saving up since I was 21 to buy a house so I've been living pretty frugally. It's hard for me to treat others when I don't even treat myself. I'm the type of person that knows all the lunch deals around town, would use restaurant apps and shit to save money, and would buy generic brand products for food.

Due to my saving efforts, I have around $80,000 saved up, with the goal of around $110,000 by the end of this year. She does not know about this - is this something I should discuss with her about? Am I in the wrong here?

tl;dr: Thought I bought girlfriend thoughtful gifts, she is not happy with the cheap price tag.

Top Comment: "$500 or $1000" My wife and I have never even spent that much on each other in 25 years together (except probably our wedding gifts to each other). We'll frequently buy each other little gifts - it really is the thought that counts.

Where can I get cheap gifts?

Main Post:

God I hate asking this, I feel like such a failure its debilitating. I'm a mailman, I'm the bread winner in the household with two kids. After bills and other expenses I'm being drained. I've already dipped into the emergency savings and still have gifts to buy for family. Does anyone know anywhere in the city where I can purchase inexpensive gifts? Before anyone gives me the rundown of its not about gifts blah blah blah. Yes I understand but easier said then done. Especially when you haven't seen family in over 2 years thanks to Covid you can't show up empty handed. Looking for kids gifts and gifts for adults as well.

Please and thank you.

Top Comment:

Best of luck to you and stop calling yourself a failure. You are far from it. You are busting your ass to be the sole provider and raising a family. Hardly a failure under any circumstances. Hold your head up and be proud. Good luck with the shopping and much happiness in the future

Broke. Any free or cheap gift ideas for GF I still have time to pull off?

Main Post:

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Top Comment: Scrubs are super easy if you have sugar and olive/coconut oil on hand. Best if you put juice and zest of citrus fruits in. I put mine in cleaned out candle holders that have tight lids. There's tons of variations. You can make a lip scrub, for example, using cinnamon, sugar, and oil. I usually try to go with a theme like 'relaxation.' I would highly recommend giving her a good massage and scrubbing her hands, feet, and legs with what you make her. Light some candles and dim the lights! Every girl likes to relax, trust me.
